Was Your Grandfather a Railwayman?
A Directory of Railway Archive Sources for Family Historians
Fourth Edition. By Tom Richards.131 pages. ISBN 1-86006-161-3.
From the 1830s railways proliferated throughout Britain. They were not built
to a great plan or design, but piecemeal, and were financed not by the State but
by private enterprise. Railways provided new opportunities for employment, attracting
men and their families to the larger centres of railway of activity, and by the
nature of the industry workers moved around the country to obtain promotion.
The railway companies kept records of their staff in varying degrees of sophistication,
and it is not surprising that some have been lost in the many changes of office
locations and reorganisations which have taken place over the last 150 years. What
is surprising is that so much has survived.
The purpose of this book is to indicate for the benefit of family history researchers,
records known to be available and where they are located at repositories in the
United Kingdom, and to increase public awareness of a national archive which is
probably the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. Similar information is
also included for a number of countries overseas.
