My Ancestors were English Presbyterians
or Unitarians
Second edition (2001). By Alan Ruston. 95 pages. ISBN 1-903462-21-5.
Family historians will be well aware that the parish registers of the Church
of England are not the only available source for identifying the baptisms, marriages
and burials of their forebears. In the late seventeenth century the Presbyterians
were the largest of all the nonconformist groups, both in terms of numbers of members
and chapels. By the early nineteenth century, they were the smallest. The family
historian therefore faces a difficult problem, as so many Presbyterian chapels disappeared
in the eighteenth century, leaving little trace, and their registers disappeared
with them. However, this booklet lists the known records for Presbyterian Chapels
in existence before 1850, with details of holdings by record offices and major libraries
